It’s a little unfair to condemn Hungary for callous — even racist — treatment of migrants when those doing the condemning bear far more responsibility for the crisis. Yes, America, I’m talking about you.

Jan-Peter Balkenende served as prime minister of The Netherlands for eight years, from 2002 to 2010, and is now partner for Corporate Responsibility at Ernst & Young and a professor of Governance, Institutions and Internationalization at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Balkenende, whose experience offers insights about the responsibility of politics and economics toward society and the future, delivered a speech in Budapest recently about corporate social responsibility (or, CSR). We caught up with him to ask a few questions afterward.

The basic principle of the market economy is that you pay the cost of your financial mistakes. That didn’t happen in the case of banks in the recent financial crisis, so you can’t say that the cause of the crisis was the free market. What Mr Orbán says is a serious misinterpretation of the causes of the crisis, states Philip Booth, editorial and program director at the Institute of Economic Affairs in London.
