Transnational economic law shall be measured against human rights standards, while there is no place for an investment protection system in an internal market – says Markus Krajewski, chair in Public Law and Public International Law at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg during a conversation with Lénárd Sándor, researcher at the American Studies Research Institute of the National University of Public Service, located in Budapest.
“Increased centralization and bureaucratic rulemaking can easily lead to a democratic deficit” - conversation with Ilya Shapiro2019. április 30. 11:44
Lénárd Sándor, researcher at the American Studies Research Institute of the National University of Public Service, located in Budapest, Hungary spoke with Ilya Shapiro, director of the Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies at the Cato Institute, one of the most widely cited research organizations across America. Ilya Shapiro talked about the establishment and role of the Cato Institute along with its Center for Constitutional Studies; about the dangers of “increased centralization” and the “one-size-fits-all” approach in public policy decisions as well as about the important role of the Supreme Court in shielding states’ rights from the central government. In the course of the conversation Ilya Shapiro also shared his thoughts on the threats of the growing “administrative state” along with the “politicization of the judiciary” and on what Europeans could learn from this American experience. Last but not least, they touched upon contemporary constitutional challenges around the world such as the dilemma of free speech on private digital platforms.

The “average Joe” image he dons, coupled with his “freedom fighter” credentials, has made Orbán a well-liked politician, respected for his decisiveness and candor.

But critics say growth in 2013 was largely down to better weather, which boosted agriculture after an appalling 2012, and investment is dominated by state infrastructure projects, funded by a last-minute drawdown of EU funds.

The whole of the West has to understand that Central and Eastern Europe are lost in the woods, but after all, the differences between Anglo-American liberal conservatism and Hungarian conservatism have been exaggerated, says John O'Sullivan. The British commentator and editor, and former advisor to Margaret Thatcher, moved to Hungary to launch the Danube Institute in Budapest. The new think tank promotes conservativism and classical liberalism. We asked him and his colleauge Gerald Frost about the goals of the Danube Institute.

The basic principle of the market economy is that you pay the cost of your financial mistakes. That didn’t happen in the case of banks in the recent financial crisis, so you can’t say that the cause of the crisis was the free market. What Mr Orbán says is a serious misinterpretation of the causes of the crisis, states Philip Booth, editorial and program director at the Institute of Economic Affairs in London. We caught up with Mr Booth recently at a conference in Slovakia entitled "Toward a Free and Virtuous Society," which was hosted by the IEA along with the Acton Institute of the US, the Austrian Europa Institut and the Slovak Kolegium Anton Neuwirth. The trouble with Hungary is that it desperately wants to be like Austria, its old partner-in-empire, but is looking far too much like Greece.

At a time when Europe is undergoing the deepest crisis since its foundation, it is shameful to see such double standards on display.
