Fidesz scored a landslide victory in the April 6 election, propelling the strong government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to a second successive term to lead Hungary. The old left again suffered a disastrous defeat, while two other parties – the radical right-wing Jobbik and the green-liberal LMP – have reason to be pleased with their results.

A satirical cartoon that appeared recently on a new, very politically incorrect Hungarian website depicts a short dialogue between party activists. "Who are we?" asks a fictitious supporter. "Eco-social, alternative-globalized, green, left-wing grassroot-democrats!" comes the answer. "And what the hell do we need?" the questioner continues. Reply: "Yet another party!" The party, of course, is the LMP, and to many who followed their recent split, the joke was spot on.

Gordon Bajnai's return to politics comes as no suprise. Nor should it surprise that the left-liberal opposition to Viktor Orbán's government remains so fragmented that it is incapable of taking any steps together in the same direction. Cooperation among the opposition will prove difficult.
